LOS ANGELES (AP) — California State University, Northridge has revised its guidelines for Greek organizations and other clubs following the death of a fraternity pledge during a hike.
The rules announced Tuesday require clubs to submit student recruitment plans in advance and have members participate in new training programs, the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/1z0MXgt ).
The moves come after 19-year-old Armando Villa died last month while hiking with other Pi Kappa Phi pledges near Big Tujunga Canyon Road. He passed out on the trail after apparently running out of water, according to his family and authorities.
Villa had completed his first year at the school.
Los Angeles County sheriff's officials and college administrators are investigating his death. Villa's family says he was hazed during and before the hike. Fraternity officials have said they are also looking into the incident and that hazing is not allowed.
The fraternity has been suspended from all activities.
Under the new guidelines, school advisers will review all recruitment plans. Prospective new members will undergo classes before participating in rush or other recruitment events, and all current members will also undergo training.
