Markets Right Now: US stocks extend rally to a 3rd day

NEW YORK (AP) — The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

4:00 p.m.

U.S. stocks closed higher, extending a rally into a third day as traders feel less anxious about Britain's vote last week to leave the European Union.

Consumer goods makers and utilities were the biggest risers Thursday. Bank stocks rose after getting clearance from the Federal Reserve to raise their dividends.

Cable channel Starz jumped 6 percent after agreeing to be acquired by Lions Gate Entertainment, which owns the "Orange Is The New Black" Netflix series.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 235 points, or 1.3 percent, to 17,929.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 28 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,098. The Nasdaq composite climbed 63 points, or 1.3 percent, to 4,842.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.48 percent.

Stocks are moving higher on Wall Street as traders feel less anxious about Britain's vote last week to leave the European Union.

Consumer and industrial companies were among the biggest risers Thursday. Bank stocks rose after getting clearance from the Federal Reserve to raise their dividends.

Cable channel Starz soared 11 percent after agreeing to be acquired by Lions Gate Entertainment, which owns the "Orange Is The New Black" Netflix series.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 117 points, or 0.7 percent, to 17,812.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 12 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,083. The Nasdaq composite climbed 30 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,809.

Bond prices rose in a sign that investors remained cautious. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.45 percent.

Stocks are opening moderately higher on Wall Street as traders feel less anxious about Britain's vote last week to leave the European Union.

Bank stocks rose broadly in early trading Thursday after getting clearance from the Federal Reserve to raise their dividends and buy back shares. Many of them announced plans to do so immediately after the Fed's announcement late Wednesday.

Lions Gate Entertainment, which owns the "Orange Is The New Black" Netflix series, jumped 10 percent after announcing it would buy the cable channel Starz.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 40 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,735.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 3 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,074. The Nasdaq composite climbed 5 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,783.
