PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Polar Express didn't quite have the steam it needed to reach the North Pole. It couldn't even make it out of Rhode Island.
The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad holiday train inspired by the popular children's book of the same name broke down Sunday night in Portsmouth.
WLNE-TV (http://bit.ly/1vgOIVk) reports that 75 to 125 people were on board when the train ran out of gas and wouldn't restart even after fueling back up. Police officers and firefighters brought passengers back to their vehicles.
The company's general manager says the mechanical issues were fixed Monday. He says the train is making a special trip to the North Pole on Tuesday for Sunday's passengers.
The train normally runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week's trips are on schedule.
