LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Board of Regents wants the state spend $26 million to jump-start a UNLV medical school that proponents say would help alleviate the region's shortage of medical specialists.
The board voted Tuesday to add the $26 million to its budget proposal submitted to Gov. Brian Sandoval. He'll decide in January whether to include it in his proposed budget to lawmakers.
KSNV-TV reports (http://tinyurl.com/qepugfc) the money would help pay for a staff of specialists and faculty to get the project off the ground. UNLV would have to raise about $100 million more to construct a building and start the programs.
UNLV hopes a donor who wants to name the medical school will pay for most of those costs.
If the Legislature approves the seed money, the school could open as early as 2016.
