LOGAN — Bail was denied Wednesday for a teenage boy accused of plotting to shoot and kill 14-year-old Deserae Turner.
Jayzon Decker, 16, will remain in custody in Cache Valley's youth detention center awaiting an eight-day jury trial that is now scheduled to begin Jan. 8, 2018, 1st District Judge Brian Cannell ordered.
The hearing came one day after bail was denied for 16-year-old Colter Peterson, the alleged gunman in what prosecutors have called a premeditated murder plot.
While Peterson is accused of pulling the trigger, prosecutors argued in a retention hearing earlier this month that Decker was the first to suggest hurting the girl.
According to police, the boys lured Deserae to join them after school on Feb. 16 under the guise of buying a knife, shot her once in the back of the head at close range, stole her belongings and left her in a dry section of a dirty canal in Smithfield.
Peterson and Decker, both Sky View High School students, are charged with attempted aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, first-degree felonies, and four counts of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony.
A nine-day jury trial for Peterson is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.
