SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Chamber is celebrating its 130th anniversary as Utah’s “voice of business” with a gala celebration and time capsule reveal Friday.

The Salt Lake Chamber is a statewide chamber of commerce and Utah’s largest business association, with members from all 29 Utah counties. The Chamber represents more than 8,000 businesses and over 500,000 Utah jobs.

Founded in 1887, the chamber was established before Utah was even granted statehood, and 130 years later, it is the state’s longest-serving business association. To honor its anniversary, Gov. Gary Herbert has declared April 23-29 Salt Lake Chamber Week.

In preparation for the 130th Gala Celebration, the Salt Lake Chamber unearthed a time capsule that was placed in the cornerstone of the original Chamber building, the Commercial Club, in 1909. The contents of the capsule will be revealed at the celebration, which will be held at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be a part of Utah’s business community, and we are eager to take this momentum into the next 130 years,” Lane Beattie, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, said in a news release. “We are confident that through the strength of our members, the chamber can tackle any challenge, creatively solve any problem, and ensure Utah remains the best state to live, work, learn and play.”

The chamber’s mission statement says that its purpose is to stand as the voice of business, support its members’ success and champion community prosperity.

Along with the gala, the Salt Lake Chamber is also hosting a “130th Birthday Bash” event on Thursday, May 25 at Publik Space from 5-8 p.m. The event is open to the public.
