AMERICAN FORK — About 25 homes in American Fork were evacuated overnight Tuesday after people opened a gas cylinder with a potentially harmful odor.

Firefighters responded to a call of respiratory problems in the area of 280 South and 400 East around 10 p.m. Monday, according to American Fork Fire Capt. Benjamin Anderson. They treated several people on scene, then called in a hazmat team because the gas cylinder had an odor that they deemed potentially dangerous; however, it was not explosive, Anderson said.

Firefighters also evacuated homes from 1,000 feet in every direction — about 25 homes.

Fifty people went to a nearby LDS church building; others stayed with relatives. The evacuation was lifted several hours later.

Crews sealed and removed the cylinder.
