LAYTON — It’s no secret most dads struggle with doing their daughters' hair. From finicky French braids to impossible ponytails, it seems big, strong hands aren’t meant to handle such delicate strands of hair.

A group in Layton is trying to change that.

On Wednesday night, Layton Community School, with the help of local beauty school Avalon, held a Daddy-Daughter hairdo class at Layton High School to arm dads with the tools they need to tackle the task.

“It’s just really hard; it doesn't make sense to me,” said Dan Muster about doing his daughter Annabelle’s hair.

The pair showed up to the event, which cost $10, ready to learn. Muster learned to braid, blow dry, straighten and curl as his daughter watched through a mirror.

"Before you know it, mom is going to be jealous, and she's going to let me do her hair,” Muster said.

During the one-hour session, you could see his confidence rise. Muster even made a commented to his daughter that they could do her hair every night.

“Maybe not every night, maybe like once a month,” Annabelle responded.

The class also taught dads about using hairspray and products to keep their work in place, something dad David Hopkins, Layton Community School director who came up with the idea, has yet to master.

“My wife would say ‘I don't get why you can don't that.’ She'd show me and I couldn't do it,” Hopkins said.

His program utilizes campuses in the area during after-school hours to hold community events where people can share their skills.

“We have pretty much everything that you need here,” Hopkins said. “From machines to tables to chairs to rooms, and it's a great way to really connect with the community."

Layton High School will host two more hairdo classes Wednesday, April 19 and Wednesday, May 10.
