SOUTH JORDAN — A house near 11800 South and 4000 West caught fire Sunday afternoon while the homeowners were away. Firefighters were able to find and revive two dogs inside the home.

Neighbors called 911 shortly after 2 p.m. to report the fire. Fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage when they arrived.

"The smoke, the flames were so big. (I was) trying to decide what to do, and stuff started exploding in the garage and windows — a couple of the windows blew out. We didn't dare go in," said Jeremy Sabin, who lives nearby.

About 10 minutes after firefighters entered the house to fight the fire from the inside, part of the ceiling collapsed.

"A mayday was called and all firefighters exited the house," a written statement statement from the South Jordan Fire Department said. "All firefighters are accounted for and no injuries occurred."

The owners were not home when the fire started, but they quickly returned when they saw a plume of smoke coming from their neighborhood.

Firefighters found two dogs in the house and and treated both of them with oxygen, the statement said. One of the dogs was resuscitated and taken to a veterinarian, but both are expected to survive.

Meanwhile, people from the Red Cross responded to the home Sunday and are helping the family.

Fire investigators believe the fire started in the garage, and they were working to determine the cause Sunday evening. Damage to the home is estimated at $200,000.
