DEAF SMITH CANYON — The human remains found in Deaf Smith Fork Canyon Sunday have been identified as a woman, police said Tuesday.

A preliminary report by the state medical examiner said the remains are of a female aged somewhere between 30 and 50 years old, according to Unified police officials.

Hikers found the remains Sunday afternoon near 3700 East and 8800 South near the trailhead to the canyon off King’s Hill Drive. A skull and a couple other bones were discovered in an area “off the beaten path” at the bottom of a 80- to 90-foot cliff.

It’s unknown how long it will take to make an exact identification on the remains, but forensics investigators hoped to use dental records to identify the remains. Police were also looking into missing person records or if anyone was last seen in the area.
