YESTERYEAR — Whether you can believe it or not, it is now 2017. We don’t have the flying cars and hoverboards like we had all hoped, but we do have computers in our pockets and electric cars that actually look cool.

2017 also means that it’s been 20 years since scientists cloned Dolly the Sheep, Princess Diana’s funeral, and the Mars Pathfinder landed on the red planet. 1997 was a year with a lot of history and also a year with a lot of movies.

In an effort to make you feel old, here is a list of films that are turning 20 years old in 2017:

“Good Will Hunting”— released Dec. 5, 1997

The names Ben Affleck and Matt Damon weren’t very well known back in 1997. Sure, some people may have recognized the Boston boys from films like “School Ties” or “Dazed and Confused,” but it wasn’t until the breakout hit “Good Will Hunting” that these two friends became Hollywood royalty.

The film won Affleck and Damon an Oscar for best writing and Robin Williams an Oscar for best supporting actor. The film was also nominated for best director and best picture.

It may not seem like the film is that old, but it was two decades ago that it was released.

“Hercules” — released June 27, 1997

There are parents everywhere who will forever have the tune of “I will go the distance” stuck in their heads until the end of time, thanks to the Disney-animated feature “Hercules.”

The film was a fun action-adventure tale that made over $252 million at the worldwide box office and continues to be played in DVD players across the world for a new generation to enjoy.

But if you remember sitting in the theater with popcorn in your lap and your feet dangling above the floor because your legs were so short, then you are now 20 years older and this movie is old enough to no longer be considered a teenager.

“Men in Black” — released July 2, 1997

Will Smith was, and mostly still is, a box office juggernaut. In the late '90s and early 2000s, the man was at the top of his game, and most of that is thanks to two movies involving aliens. One is “Independence Day,” which turned 20 last year, and “Men in Black,” which is about to turn the big 20.

“Men in Black” was a huge box office hit and spurned two sequels. The movie is still fun to watch even after 20 years.

“Titanic” — released Dec. 19, 1997

That’s right, you’ve been listening to “My Heart Will Go On” for 20 years now. Maybe it’s time to give it a rest.

The movie that broke all box office records and sparked the debate of, “Could Jack and Rose have fit on that piece of wood?” is entering its 20s. The films still stands as the second highest grossing film worldwide of all time. Whether you like the film or not, odds are you’ve seen it and considering the box office returns, you’ve seen it more than once.

Jack and Rose are now 20 years older, both have Oscars, and both are still king of the world (in Hollywood at least) 20 years later.

“Star Wars: Special Editions” —released Jan. 31, 1997, Feb. 21, 1997, March 7, 1997

“Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” was released in 1997 and as a nod to the 20-year anniversary to the film, and in an effort to make more cash, George Lucas re-released the “Special Editions” of the original three movies.

The films were released in month intervals from January to March 1997. That means it was 20 years ago, my friends and I slept out in front of the South Towne Cinemark Theater in Sandy to buy our tickets. I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but we did it for all three films, and at the time, I thought it was totally worth it.

Looking back, the additions to the film were more obnoxious than anything else, but it gave me an excuse to skip school and see the original Star Wars films in the theaters.

Those special editions are now 20 years old, and if you can handle this, the original film is turning 40.
