PROVO — We can all use a little help from our friends, and finding that partner may be just the first step toward living a healthier life.

Liz Casperson and Melissa Garver are neighbors, friends and now workout partners.

"She's always my best cheerleader," said Casperson.

"Liz is really good at trying new exercises," said Garver.

The two teamed up earlier this year when Casperson put a plea on Facebook, looking for someone to sign up for Intermountain Healthcare's 100-day-heart challenge at Utah Valley Hospital. Casperson had competed the previous year, so she was not eligible, but if Intermountain Healthcare approved a friend, they could team up together.

Their hard work paid off and received second place. Now these competitive friends are back at it, competing in the alumni version.

"I've lost 70 pounds over the course of the three challenges," said Casperson.

Garver has lost 30 pounds.

Call it strength in numbers or the power of two. "Oh pairs are always better, teams are always better," said Intermountain Healthcare Director of Cardiac Rehab Traci Heiner. "When you've got somebody with you, it does push you. Most of us are a little bit competitive and we don't want to go slower than our partner does."

Here are some other workout partner benefits: You are less likely to cancel a workout; you talk and forget you're exercising. That will clear your mind and help with stress; and most importantly, a workout partner will keep you on track.
