KEARNS — A man was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday after a rollover road rage incident on state Route 201.

Two cars were driving east on the highway when the drivers got into a verbal argument at the traffic light at 8000 West about 5 p.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

"When the light turned green, the driver of the Trailblazer pulled in front of the BMW and 'braked checked' it," the UHP said in a statement. "The driver of the BMW changed lanes, pulled parallel to the Trailblazer, and swerved into the Trailblazer's lane. The driver of the Trailblazer retaliated and swerved at the BMW, but then lost control and slid off the right side of the road."

The SUV, which was occupied by three people, rolled, ejecting one passenger who was not wearing a seat belt. Jared Hansen, 30, of Ogden, was "thrown a considerable distance" and suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the UHP. He was transported to University Hospital in extremely critical condition.

The other two occupants suffered minor cuts and scrapes. Both were wearing seat belts.

Troopers are still looking for the driver of the BMW, who they say never stopped.

UHP troopers reported finding drugs and drug paraphernalia in the Trailblazer and the driver, Brandon Atkinson, 30, of West Valley City, was arrested for investigation of DUI.

"Troopers want to remind all drivers that it is not worth risking your or someone else's life to retaliate against someone who cut you off or otherwise offended you with their driving," the UHP said in a statement. "The best course of action is to slow down, calm down, let the other driver get past you, and arrive at your destination safely."
