SALT LAKE CITY — It can be very discouraging to read tragic stories in the news.

Fortunately, there are also "good news" stories out there, and in KSL.com's "Make Your Week" column, those stories are featured.

A supportive community

Deanne L.

"I'd like to do a 'shout out' to Chick-fil-A for their great Spirit Night program. September is Hydrocephalus Awareness month. Our little grandson has Hydrocephalus, so we are involved in finding ways to earn money to help with research. This year, my daughter set up a Spirit Night with Chick-fil-A. What an amazing service they provide to the community! Thanks Tracy and staff! Thanks also to the many kind people in West Jordan who were there to support and those who were just coming to eat and ended up donating and being part of the positive energy."

Helping a mom

Ginger B.

"Sept. 12 I went to the store to return a blanket that was unraveling at the seams. I gathered my 1-year-old out of the car, the big blanket and my wallet — all trying to balance all three in my hands before getting a shopping cart. I walked towards the store and got two parking stalls away from my van when I dropped my wallet onto the oily part of the stall.

An older gentleman offered to help me from across the parking lot to pick up my wallet. I was extremely grateful because I didn't want to drop the huge blanket onto the dirty, oily ground. While he was doing this, I noticed that the unraveling string from the blanket had gotten stuck in my van door and had been unraveling the entire length of the two parking stalls.

Another gentlemen had seen this happening and offered to help me too. He walked over to my van, opened the door and got it unstuck and gathered the string up. Both of these men saw both of my needs and offered to help. It made my day! I have had bad experiences before with people being grumpy and not understanding the stress of shopping with kids. Not today! I was given extra love!"

A helpful camper

"Three weeks ago, I and some members of the Northern Utah ATV Club rode out of Marysvale on the Paiute trail. We spent the first night in Fillmore. I decided to return by the same trail we had come the day before. I was by myself when my machine started to 'miss and sputter.'

I had passed some lone campers earlier high on the trail, so I 'limped' into their camp. A man by the name of Brandon from Spanish Fork helped me take the machine apart and got me going. It might seem insignificant, but to me it was a great act of kindness. Thanks to Brandon from Spanish Fork."
