In an ideal world, you’d be able to buy a new house when yours got old and tired. But if you’re not in a position to pick up and move or invest thousands in a new upgraded home, consider updating your current one to feel new and full of life. You may not be able to change your address, but you can certainly update and revamp your current home.

KSL and Giant Carpet One have compiled a helpful list of ways to make your house feel like new again, without breaking the bank. Read on for some inspiration to spark your own sense of adventure for home improvements.

Deep clean

Yes, cleaning can be tedious, but with the right tools and proper execution, your home can go from looking like Eeyore’s Gloomy Place to Caesar’s Palace. Focus on areas that may not get the most attention on your normal cleaning days; baseboards, light fixtures, walls and upholstery are usually good places to start.

As you deep clean your home, look for areas that might need more than just a wash or polish. After all, improvements also come with small and simple replacements as you go.

Update fixtures

This might seem like a lot of work, but it’s really not. All you need is a screwdriver and the new fixture, and you’re looking at a whole new home. Things like light switches, door and cabinet handles, and outlet covers might seem insignificant, but when updated to today’s design standard, it can make a huge difference in your home’s aesthetics.

Touch-up walls

Over years of living in your home, your walls can take quite the beating. Particularly when children grow up in a home, walls can lack the smooth, clean look that’s synonymous to new homes. Still, there are a few simple steps to remedy the situation:

  • Deep clean your walls to eliminate fingerprints and grime
  • Remove visible scuffs and stains with scrapers, and plain old soap and water
  • Respackle dents and old holes, making sure the repair is flush with the wall
  • Repaint if necessary, although most can get away with some quick touch-ups
Walls are constantly there and may melt into the background most of the time, but you’d be surprised what a difference these touch-ups will make.

Polish wood

Whether in the form of furniture, countertops or flooring, it’s a good idea to take some time to care for your wood. Before doing anything, make sure you know what type of polish or maintenance solution is required. It’s also a good idea to test your solution on a small and unseen area of the wood before proceeding. Once your wood furniture and cabinetry is cleaned and polished, it will gleam and reflect a well kept (like new) home.

Replace old flooring

Carpets and flooring put up with a lot over the years, and some flooring types are less forgiving than others. If you’ve worked on some stains to no avail and know that your laminate is far past its youthful look, perhaps it’s time to give up the battle and get new flooring.

It’s amazing what some new plush carpet will do for any room, including bedrooms and living areas. In addition, new technologies allow for some pretty convincing laminates to enhance your home’s charm. And the best part is that new flooring is a fairly inexpensive and convenient renovation to complete. For all your carpeting and flooring needs, choose Giant Carpet One.
