ST. GEORGE — An alert Utah Highway Patrol trooper sparked an investigation that led to 28 pounds of meth being seized by state investigators and one man being arrested.

On Monday, a trooper pulled over a Jeep Liberty near St. George for speeding, UHP Capt. Tayler Kotter said. The trooper asked the driver several questions, including inquiries about his travel plans, but his story wasn't adding up.

A drug-sniffing K-9 was called to the scene, and 18 packages of meth were found in a hidden compartment in the back of the vehicle under the back seat.

Salvador Santana, 29, was arrested for investigation of drug distribution. He was traveling from Los Angeles to Michigan, Kotter said.

The investigation was still ongoing Wednesday.
