TORONTO (AP) — Tosaint Ricketts scored his first Major League Soccer goal to help Toronto FC beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Toronto's (9-7-6) won its third straight to move into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference. The Reds are unbeaten in eight games in a row a home.
Goalkeeper Alex Bono's free kick in the 68th minute was redirected by Jozy Altidore to Ricketts, who beat a challenging Nick Rimando to the left side. Ricketts, from Edmonton, Alberta, was making his third career MLS appearance after signing with Toronto on July 20. The 28-year-old subbed in for forward Jordan Hamilton in the 56th minute.
Bono made a big save in the 77th minute to preserve the lead, executing a perfect challenge on Juan Manuel Martinez in the area, en route to his third shutout of the season.
Real Salt Lake dropped to 9-7-7.
