SALT LAKE CITY — A Wyoming man was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison for his attack of a U.S. Forest Service officer last year in Lambs Canyon.

Aaron Bradley Jereb, 34, will serve the sentence for his convictions of assault on a federal officer and possession of heroin, meth and drug paraphernalia. He was found guilty of those offenses in May by a U.S. District Court jury, which acquitted him of harming a law enforcement animal and marijuana possession.

Jereb attacked Forest Service K-9 officer Darren Schiedel on Oct. 15, 2015, after Schiedel had issued drug-related citations to the man and a woman who was with him. The woman, Amber Haanpaa, had asked Schiedel to help them jump-start their stalled Chevy Blazer.

After the officer did so, Jereb confronted Schiedel and said, "You don't look so good." Jereb also told Schiedel that backup officers would never arrive in time to help him, court documents say.

Schiedel remotely summoned his dog, Livo, from his police vehicle. Livo brought Jereb to the ground. Prosecutors alleged Jereb tried to strangle the K-9 and gouged its eyes.

Schiedel used his Taser in an attempt to subdue Jereb. However, Jereb wrested the weapon from Schiedel's control and used it several times on the officer. Schiedel eventually regained control of the Taser and also deployed pepper spray on Jereb.

Jereb ran from Schiedel and was eventually arrested by arriving officers.

Jereb faced the possibility of up to 20 years in prison for his convictions. His six-year sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell.

Jereb is being held temporarily in the Weber County Jail.
