NEW YORK CITY — According to a report from Howard Beck of Bleacher Report, the New York Knicks have chosen to make former Utah Jazz player Jeff Hornacek head coach of the franchise.
Breaking: Knicks will hire Jeff Hornacek as head coach, per NBA source. — Howard Beck (@HowardBeck) May 18, 2016
Hornacek, who was fired as head coach of the Phoenix Suns in February, played for the Utah Jazz for nearly seven seasons, including during Utah's trips to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998.
Derek Fisher, also a former Jazz player, was fired from the Knicks head coaching position after a week after Hornacek was let go. Kurt Rambis took over as interim coach and appeared to be the frontrunner to take the job permanently, but Hornacek seems to have impressed team executive Phil Jackson. Hornacek is generally the more well-regarded coach nationally.
The Knicks have had tremendous turmoil in their on-court leadership. Hornacek will be New York's fifth head coach in six years. That being said, he'll take over an intriguing roster, with star Carmelo Anthony and rookie sensation Kristaps Porzingis leading the way.
