SALT LAKE CITY — Around 200 students took the SATs on the campus of the University of Utah 10 days ago.

Five days later, an email was sent notifying them that their scores were lost — the shipment never made it to the processing center.

"He was quite upset. He really didn't understand how it could happen,” said Anne Hamill, whose son is a junior at Highland High. Hamill’s son plans to apply to competitive colleges and took the SAT, including the hand-written essay, on May 7.

Right after the test, Hamill’s son told his mother how good he felt about his exam.

"He thought it went really well, and particularly the essay,” said Hamill. “He said, ‘I really nailed that one, Mom.’”

A few days later, students and parents got the email from Educational Testing Services telling them the answer sheets were lost, and unlikely to be found.

If the shipment is found before the make-up test next Saturday, the students will be notified.

"He was really disheartened and upset when he found out that that test score was lost," Hamill said.

In an email response, ETS told KSL they are working to find the tests. They think it's unlikely the tests were stolen.

Security is thorough. Individually identified tests arrive in tamper-proof boxes, remain in locked storage and are shipped securely.

"All of us were really surprised to find out that could actually ever happen,” Hamill said.

Hamill said her son is having his wisdom teeth removed the day before the make-up test, so they're not exactly sure when he'll take the exam … again.
