KAYSVILLE — One week later, 2-year-old Lexi Briscoe is still being treated at the University of Utah Burn Center for second and third degree burns after pulling a rice cooker full of boiling water off her kitchen counter on top of her.

"She was in the kitchen with her mother making some rice," Briscoe's grandfather, Rob Daugherty, explained. "She grabbed a towel with the rice cooker on it and pulled it off and it just came down."

Bricoe was rushed to the hospital's burn center where she's been since April 19. She has undergone treatment, physical therapy and skin graft surgery.

Daugherty says he wants parents to "just be aware of what can happen so quick, in a matter of a split second."

Brad Wiggens with the University of Utah Burn Center said, "It's those little things that we don't think about."

Wiggens said the No. 1 reason people show up to the U. of U. Burn Center is because of injuries from hot liquid. Ninety percent of the cases involve children under 3.

"Everything from rice cookers to toasters to coffee makers to tea makers." Wiggens said any appliance in your kitchen that heats things up can be a risk to your children. That's why it's important for parents to take the necessary steps to minimize those risks. "Making sure appliances are back against the back. Making sure if it has a long cord that the cord is actually stored behind it," he said.

Briscoe will be recuperating in the hospital for the next two weeks. Daugherty said to help raise money for medical expenses he will be auctioning off* some of his original wildlife photography and other donated items at www.helpinglexi.com. The website will be launched Thursday, April 28. Another site is https://www.facebook.com/BeatingTheBurn.
