AMERICAN FORK — Greenwood Elementary Gators and their parents have really sunk their teeth into the school's focus on family reading.

"I think we spend more time together and we fight less, and that's good," said sixth-grader Jordan Duran.

"I think it's just fun to get the whole family to read," added sixth-grader Mallory Witt. "Make a lot of memories."

That was precisely the goal of KSL's Read Today Pizza Challenge. Families all over Utah demonstrated their reading for about a month and qualified for free Papa Murphy's pizza. In all, nearly 8,000 families enjoyed free dinners.

At Greenwood, students sent proof of their families reading over spring break. They took selfies reading at the Golden Gate Bridge, during a family road trip and relaxing at home.

Principal Matt Killpack believes the enthusiasm followed students back to school. "We see students that just have a passion for reading, a love for that and understand how important and exciting it is."

So Chopper 5 and Read Today celebrated their commitment with a Literacy Landing.

Following the party, students and their families will return to the school at night for dinner and more reading to really drive home the message.

"We're a team," said Jennye Harding, of Greenwood Elementary. "We're part of the team and the families are part of the team and we need our families to support reading to increase literacy at home."

Sixth-grader Nick Pena Scott added perhaps the most convincing validation their efforts are resonating. "Who doesn't like reading with their parents?"
