SALT LAKE CITY — If you’re guilty of circling the parking lot, looking for that perfect spot, you’re not alone.

What you may not know is those empty spots at the back of the parking lot that seem like inconvenience, are more of an opportunity.

“It’s just inherent for us just to try and do less, and we need to think about ways we can get more physical activity,” said Locke Ettinger, director of health promotion and wellness for Intermountain Healthcare.

And going the distance is the goal behind Intermountain Healthcare’s Park Farther program.

“We should be getting 10,000 steps a day," he said. Our surgeon general has just said that we should be a walking America, and he suggested that we walk more as a nation.”

The Park Farther stalls can be found at retail outlets and Associated Foods stores throughout the state.

Registered dietitian and nutritionist Ron Beckstrom with Associated Foods says they’re happy to be involved. “One of the reasons we decided to become involved with LiVe Well is because, like them, we share a goal of supporting the health of our communities and those that shop at our grocery stores.”

Park Farther stalls can be found at grocery stores like Dan's, Macey's, Fresh Market, Dick's and Lin's. Take the time to park in one of these stalls and you might be rewarded with a $15 Amazon gift card on your windshield, making that effort well worth your time.

“At Associated Foods we view ourselves as partners with our customers in achieving whatever their health goals might be," Beckstrom said. "Whether it be walking more through the Park Farther stalls or eating healthier through making better choices in your grocery shopping.” Jenniffer is a Special Projects Producer who heads up the Your Life Your Health, Zero Fatalities and High 5 initiatives.
