SALT LAKE CITY — It's been nearly two weeks since the death of Officer Doug Barney, and Saturday, his son, Jack received a little extra support from the community in the form of his favorite sport: hockey.

Jack Barney is a big hockey fan, and his mom told him he was going to be a part of the 15th annual Utah Guns and Hoses hockey game.

"She said, 'Oh, you'll be able to warm up with them, and I was amazed already right then, and then she kept going on, and I was like 'What?' "Jack Barney said.

Jack hit the ice and warmed up with his team, then dropped the puck at the start of the game.

He then took his place as coach, and his first order of business was, "beat the firefighters."

The guns have a history of winning this game.

"Fire's been getting a lot better in the last couple games, gone to overtime, but the guns have pulled it out," Utah State prison sergeant and hockey player Nick Lund said.

And this year, under the careful direction of Coach Barney, they won again.

"I think that overtime started he just told us to go score a goal, so it's pretty good, keep it simple," Lund said.

Jack got an up close look at the Grizzlies locker room. He met the players and got his own jersey. For this boy, who's had to grow up so much in the past couple of weeks, tonight was a time for celebration and another reminder of the unending support of this community.
