MIDVALE — A 23-year-old man died Friday after hitting a flatbed truck on I-215 Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Austin S. Atack was driving a Nissan passenger car east around 3:30 p.m. near Union Park Avenue when the accident occurred. He struck the right rear of a flatbed carrying empty 55-gallon barrels, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Police said the truck was believed to be traveling at or slightly below the speed limit, and Atack hit it at a high rate of speed.

Both of the vehicles went off the right shoulder, and the truck hit a concrete sound wall, sustaining a lot of damage. The truck was blocking one of the lanes.

The Nissan spun and stopped in the right emergency lane, and the bed of the truck caused severe damage to the top of the car.

Atack was extricated and air lifted to Intermountain Medical Center in extremely critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. on Friday.
