Last weekend, Intermountain Healthcare wrapped up its 100 Day Heart Challenge as hundreds of racers lined up for the seventh annual Race for Red in Provo. The challenge began in February when 20 participants committed to improving their heart health.

This isn't her first time crossing the finish line for one participant, Kena Mathews, but she admits, “It’s the first I probably didn’t cheat.”

Her transformation wasn't something she could cheat. Looking back 100 days, Mathews knew it was time for a change. “I have a very busy schedule and a very busy job, so I’ve had to make working out a priority in my life. I’ve really had to change the way I think about myself, think about my health and the way I look at things in the world,” she said.

Mathews faced the challenge head-on and with the help of a personal trainer, cooking classes and a support group, she was able to make great strides, losing nearly 40 pounds.

“I’ve probably eaten more fruits and vegetables in the last 100 days than I have in my entire life,” Mathews said.

A dramatic weight loss that has earned her the energy to do things she’s never done before. She was able to hike to Y Mountain in Provo for the first time, all while facing temptations. “I have not had a Diet Coke for 14 weeks. Still want one, but have not had one.”

Mathews says finding that balance within her busy life has changed her life for the better. “It’s important to really care about yourself. This forced me to do that and that’s been really important," she said. "You can do it, I did it, anyone can do it.”
