Most people are familiar with the Chinese proverb about giving a man a fish versus teaching a man to fish. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

The same can be said for [teaching children how to code websites](<http://www.ksl.com/ad_logger/ad_logger.php?location=https://simplycoding.org/& sponsor=Simply Coding>), since coding is a skill that can be used in many aspects throughout life.

Here are eight reasons your children should learn how to code websites.

Lets them use their imagination

As children start to realize they can create anything they think of with code, it allows them to have fun and explore new ideas they otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

"It’s awesome to see kids begin to understand how a computer reads code to then start creating websites around their ideas," said Seth Iorg, CEO and co-founder of [Simply Coding](<http://www.ksl.com/ad_logger/ad_logger.php?location=https://simplycoding.org/& sponsor=Simply Coding>).

Helps develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills

Developing basic computational thinking skills encourages a unique way of thinking that can be beneficial for children.

Linda Liukas, founder of the Rails Girls coding organization, mentioned to the International Business Times the importance of students who are learning to understand the basics of how computers work in their classrooms.

“I don’t think everyone will be a coder, but the ability to speak and structure your thinking in a way a computer understands it will be one of the core future skills, whatever your field," she said.

Opens the door to job opportunities

There are plenty of job opportunities available to those who know how to code, and there are more job opportunities to come as the demand increases in the future.

Code.org co-founder Ali Partovi estimates that 1.4 million programming jobs will be needed over the next decade, according to Forbes. Current projections show for only 400,000 graduates in the field.

If you want to guarantee a secure future for your children, now is the time to teach them the basics of coding.

Allows them to show their creativity

Every child thinks differently and sees the world in different ways. Coding allows for children to use their creativity and show others the way their minds work.

"Kids are proud of the work they can do when coding and can’t wait to share it with everyone," said Iorg.

Coding is a language that will never go away

According to an article written by Dan Crow for The Guardian, as the world of technology becomes more advanced, "not knowing the language of computers will be as challenging as being illiterate or innumerate are today."

Children who have basic coding skills will be prepared to take on whatever the future brings.

Gives non-coders confidence with technology

An article from LinkedIn quotes professor Seymour Papert, who is known as the father of technology, as saying, "Children should be programming the computer rather than being programmed by it."

No matter what occupation your children decide to pursue, as long as they know the basics of coding, they will have the confidence they need when it comes to technology.

Interact with children who have similar interests

Similar to extracurricular activities, children who share an interest in coding can work together to create websites and other coding projects. This builds friendships and possible networking connections that may be valuable down the road.

"It’s encouraging to see students help each other develop ideas into real coding projects," Iorg said.

Prepares them to understand future technology

Technology is constantly changing and upgrading. An article from the Los Angeles Times states that "as software continues to expand in its presence around the world, reading and writing code will eventually become a new form of literacy."

As new technology is introduced, children who know code will know how to properly use it in a way that will be beneficial for everyone.
