HOLLADAY — Four Unified police officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation early Thursday after going door-to-door of a burning apartment complex to lead tenants to safety.

The officers were treated at the scene and then briefly taken to a local hospital as a precaution, said Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton. The officers were cleared a short time later and returned to work that night, he said.

"They did a great job," said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

The fire started just after midnight at a complex near 1300 East and Murray-Holladay Road. Four officers arrived at the scene minutes before fire crews and saw heavy fire coming out of one apartment, Anderton said.

The officers were "very heads-up" and immediately jumped into action evacuating surrounding apartments, he said.

The officers went door-to-door waking up tenants, in some cases actually forcing their way into an apartment to make sure the tenants were awake and got out safely.

No injuries to tenants were reported. Fire damage was contained to the one unit where the fire started, though other apartments suffered some smoke and water damage, Anderton said.

Because investigators found evidence of multiple ignition points inside the apartment that burned, they were calling the fire "suspicious" Thursday.

As of Thursday evening, they had not been able to locate the mother and her adolescent son who lived there to question them about what happened, Anderton said.
