Groups offer Thanksgiving meals, services to those in need

SALT LAKE CITY — Hours before doors opened Tuesday morning, people were lined up to get inside EnergySolutions Arena.

The event? The 16th annual We Care — We Share Thanksgiving Dinner for homeless and low-income residents.

During this collaboration between the Larry H. Miller family, Miller Sports Properties, the Salt Lake City Mission, Utah Food Services and All-Star Catering, 3,600 meals were estimated to have been given out between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In addition, there was a clothing distribution, musical performances and activity packets for children.

"It's really just about trying to provide a meal for all the people that would like one," said Frank Zang, vice president of communications for Miller Sports Properties.

Miller Sports is one of the local agencies providing services and meals to those in need during the week of Thanksgiving.

Wednesday

The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, 463 S. 400 West, will provide dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will also offer free clothing and shoes, haircuts, shaves, showers and flu shots. Supplies are first-come, first-served. Those who live in Palmer Court can take a free shuttle to and from the dinner, leaving every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, call 801-355-1302.

Crossroads Urban Center will hand out turkeys and trimmings at the Urban Indian Center, 120 W. 1300 South, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or until supplies are gone. Those who want a turkey need to bring a picture ID for each adult, and a birth certificate, medical record, passport, state ID, immunization card or report card with a parent's address for each child. Thursday

The Church at Liberty Park, 662 E. 1300 South, will host a Thanksgiving meal for anyone who wants celebrate the holiday with others between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Those interested can call 801-973-0088 to reserve a seat. If you reach the voicemail, leave a message with your name and the number of people attending. Anyone who wants to volunteer between 9 a.m. and noon or between noon and 3 p.m. can call 801-973-0088, ext. 3.

People can pick up a sack lunch on Thanksgiving Day or any day of the year between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. through the Good Samaritan program at The Cathedral of the Madeleine, 347 E. South Temple.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake will host a Thanksgiving meal at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, 279 S. 300 West, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Utah Pride Center, 255 E. 400 South, will co-host a Thanksgiving potluck with Volunteers of America-Utah, the People with AIDS Coalition of Utah and Utah Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meat and vegan main dishes will be available, along with drinks. Those who can are asked to bring appetizers for last names between A and G, salads and sides for H-M and desserts for N-Z. Those unable to bring a dish can still attend. The Salt Lake City Mission will continue giving by providing a meal at the Christian Life Center, 1055 N. Redwood Road, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Volunteers can sign up to help with the event at saltlakecitymission.org.
