Former BYU golfer Zac Blair inched closer to joining friends and fellow Utahns Scott Pinckney and Tony Finau on the PGA Tour next season with a strong opening round Thursday at the Web.com Tour Championship.
Blair shot a record-tying 7-under 63 at Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, to take a two-shot lead in the final event of the Web.com Tour Finals.
Twenty-five PGA Tour cards are up for grabs at this week's final. A top five finish will virtually secure Blair's place with the United States' top flight next year.
Blair played bogey-free golf en route to his course record. He carded a birdie on holes No. 1, 3, 6 and 7 en route to a 31 on the front nine before securing a 32 on the back.
