SALT LAKE COUNTY — A wrong-way driver caused the closure of an eastbound on-ramp for several hours Thursday morning, police said.

Police received reports of a vehicle traveling eastbound on the westbound lanes on I-80 near milepost 86, according to Utah Highway Patrol. The driver traveled the wrong way for several miles until he collided with a semitruck near milepost 84, police said.

The vehicle rolled several times and landed on its top in the median, near an eastbound onramp. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to the University of Utah Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the semitruck and a passenger were uninjured in the accident.

The I-80 eastbound on-ramp near milepost 84 was closed for several hours. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
