SALT LAKE CITY — Former big league pitcher Chris Volstad had big shoes to fill on the mound for the Salt Lake Bees Monday.

His teammate, Bees right-hander Caleb Clay, threw a complete game shutout Sunday against Las Vegas, and was named the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week. Volstad, who has pitched for the Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies in his career, had a mixed start against the Reno Aces, but the Bees overcame the Aces late, beating Reno 7-6 at Smith’s Ballpark.

Former major leaguers were found up and down the Salt Lake lineup, with first baseman C.J. Cron returning to the Bees after being with parent club Los Angeles since May 3. Taylorsville grad John Buck also saw his first playing time with the Bees after signing a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The veteran catcher was recently released by the Mariners.

Reno opened scoring with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by four consecutive singles to open the inning. However, Salt Lake countered with two runs in the third, cutting the score to 4-2 on a two-run home run by right fielder Brennan Boesch.

Chris Volstad allowed six runs, five of them earned, over five and two- thirds innings of work and was tagged with the no decision.

The Bees briefly took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. First, third baseman Luis Jimenez hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, and then Boesch tripled to score first baseman C.J. Cron to tie the game at 4-4. Boesch scored on a double from catcher John Hester to give the Bees a 5-4 lead.

However, the Aces scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to retake a 6- 5 lead. But Salt Lake again countered, with Cron scoring on a Hester single to tie the game at 6-6.

Then in the eighth, with two outs in the inning, left fielder J.B. Shuck scored on a Boesch single to give Salt Lake the 7-6 win.

Notable offensive performances for Salt Lake included Boesch’s three hits with four RBIs and Hester’s four hits and two RBIs.

Bees reliever Dustin Richardson earned the win for Salt Lake, throwing one- and-one-third innings of no-hit ball. Both Volstad and Aces starter Mike Bolsinger took no decisions in the game.

With the win, Salt Lake’s record when tied after the seventh inning improves to 5-4.

Salt Lake and Reno are scheduled to play the second game of a four-game series Tuesday, with Bees right-hander Wade LeBlanc scheduled to take the mound against Aces left hander Andrew Chafin. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
