WASHINGTON (AP) — In a story Sept. 26 fact-checking Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's claims about having his tax returns audited, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the IRS does not use the term "examination" for any kind of formal action. The terms "examination" and "audit" are synonymous.

A corrected version of the story is below:

AP FACT CHECK: Trump on his tax audits

Donald Trump claims he's been under tax audit for 15 years, but there's no evidence he's being checked

WASHINGTON (AP) — A claim from the presidential debate and how it stacks up with the facts:

TRUMP: "I've been under audit for almost 15 years."

THE FACTS: Donald Trump has never provided any evidence to the public that he is actually under audit. A letter released by his tax attorneys merely described his tax returns as under examination.

Trump has declined to provide the IRS' formal notice of audit to The Associated Press and other news outlets. And former IRS officials have expressed skepticism that anyone would be audited so frequently.
