BEND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon businessman is looking to take U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden's job.

The Bulletin newspaper reports (http://is.gd/ZvDB2N ) 67-year-old Sam Carpenter of Bend has joined the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Wyden this fall.

Carpenter has owned the Bend-based telephone-answering service Centratel since 1984. He also has written two books on business management, worked as a consultant and founded a charitable organization to assist victims of a 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. He's never held elected office.

Carpenter says his work helping small businesses turn around would be an asset in Washington, D.C.

He is the fourth candidate to enter the race for the Republican nomination. He joins Lane County Commissioner Faye Stewart, 2014 Senate candidate Mark Callahan and Dan Laschober, a Wilsonville software and finance consultant.

Wyden, a Democrat, has been in the Senate since 1996.
