SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Starting next year, Utah students will have to pass a U.S. citizenship test to graduate high school.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert on Monday signed legislation requiring high school and adult education program students to correctly answer 35 out of 50 questions on the test.

The law takes effect this July which means next year's graduates will have to pass the test.

The requirement is being pushed in Utah by the Joe Foss Institute, an Arizona-based organization that wants to see all 50 states pass similar laws.

Utah is one of 15 states expected to consider the civics education measure this year.
