SALT LAKE CITY — Last year, Kansas City couldn't buy a win if it offered its opponents all the Arthur Bryant's burnt end sandwiches in the world.

Who knew it would take a "Philly" to become a winner once again?

Kansas City coach Andy Reid has the Chiefs in the driver's seat in the AFC West, as league fans lie in waiting for a Nov. 17 matchup against the Denver Broncos on CBS.

For now, Utah football fans can take pride in the sense that the two main artists for the comeback — BYU's Reid and Utah's Alex Smith — both played collegiately in the Beehive State.

Smith completed 24 of 36 passes and threw for two touchdowns in the Chiefs' win over the Cleveland Browns. Also, Sean Smith made two tackles for Kansas City.

Other former Utah defensive stars performed well in the eighth week of the NFL season. Star Lotulelei made three tackles as Carolina beat Tampa Bay, 31-13. The Utes' trio of Miami Dolphins also contributed, as Koa Misi made three tackles, Derrick Shelby made two tackles and Paul Soliai made four tackles. Regardless, the Dolphins lost to New England, 27-17.

Paul Kruger made two tackles and had a sack for Cleveland in the Browns' loss to Kansas City.

Several former BYU defensive standouts also had an impact on this week's NFL play. Brett Keisel registered five tackles and a sack, but the Steelers lost to Oakland, 21-18. Also, Ezekiel Ansah made two tackles in Detroit's win over Dallas.

Other local standouts like Eric Weddle and Haloti Ngata were on bye weeks.
