CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — A former Virginia police officer who fatally shot an 18-year-old man has been sentenced to three months in jail.

News media outlets report that a judge imposed the sentence for former Richmond Police Officer David L. Cobb on Wednesday. A jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter in February for the October 2015 shooting of Paterson Brown Jr.

Cobb's conviction came in his second trial. The judge declared a mistrial in June after jurors became deadlocked.

Officials say Brown got into the officer's vehicle at the car wash and drove it out of the washing bay. They say Cobb told him to get out and later shot Brown during an altercation. Cobb wasn't on duty.

Cobb resigned from the police department after his conviction.
