OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A jury has convicted a Utah man of fatally shooting another man in an argument over stolen money.
The Standard-Examiner of Ogden (http://bit.ly/2mQNMOD) reported Tuesday that 32-year-old Andrew Esquer was found guilty in the 2015 killing of 32-year-old William Hicks.
Prosecutors say Esquer shot Hicks in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun while Hicks was reaching into his backpack.
Esquer's attorney said during closing arguments Monday that his client feared for his life. A state prosecutor said Esquer had no reason to be afraid because he was armed and Hicks was only reaching for a can of potato chips.
Esquer is expected to be sentenced in May. He was found guilty of murder and obstruction of justice. He faces 16 years to life in prison.
