CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A Big Piney hunter charged with poaching a unique mule deer and displaying it at a hunting expo will serve jail time.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2eMntE8 ) that Nathan Strong was sentenced Tuesday to up to 10 days in jail. He must pay $9,000 and will lose both his hunting and fishing privileges for seven years.
Strong had admitted that he shot the buck out of season with a white-tail deer tag last year. The deer was labeled as non-typical because it had an unusual set of antlers.
Authorities were alerted to the poaching after sportsmen reported seeing the deer at the 2016 Hunting Expo in Salt Lake City.
John Lund says residents had become familiar with the deer, which they saw almost daily in the Hoback Ranches area.
