SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake health officials are warning the public not to touch bats or other wild animals because of the possibility of rabies.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2eg4fsB) that the Salt Lake County Health Department said Friday that three bats in the area have tested positive for rabies.
Department medical director Dr. Dagmar Vitek says to find that many in a short time period is unusual.
The infected bats were found throughout a multi-block area of downtown Salt Lake.
Health officials say bats with rabies may behave abnormally and be more approachable than normal.
Rabies can be contracted through a bite, scratch or saliva from an infected animal.
It is fatal once symptoms appear.
Anyone who comes across a bat should call the local animal control office.
