SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The University of Illinois campus in Springfield is preparing to break ground on its first-ever student union building.

The ground breaking for the $21.7 million project will be Wednesday morning. University of Illinois President Timothy Killeen, UIS Chancellor Susan Kosch and the mayor of Springfield are scheduled to attend.

The building will have two stories and 50,000 square feet. It will house campus dining, a coffee shop and an event ballroom. It also will have offices and workspaces for student government, volunteers and student organizations. It's scheduled to open in January 2018.

So far the school has raised $5.3 million for the project. Their goal is $8 million before the facility opens. Campus funds and a construction fee will pay for the remaining $13.7 million.
