SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Longtime state legislator John Valentine will become the chair of the Utah State Tax Commission after his Senate colleagues on Wednesday unanimously approved his appointment.

Valentine, an Orem Republican, has been a legislator for 26 years.

He is also a tax attorney in a Provo law firm and has been known in the Legislature as a key figure in the state's liquor laws.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1qgWaMf ) lawmakers on Wednesday paid tribute to Valentine, who gave an emotional goodbye and said the decision to leave was difficult.

Valentine will be sworn in as tax commission chair on Monday.

Utah County Republicans will pick a replacement for Valentine later this year.
