MAGNA — Two men have been arrested in a case involving police equipment stolen out of Heber City.
Leo Carl Andrews Jr., 41, and David John Young, 50, both from Magna, were each arrested for investigation of two counts of possessing stolen property and two counts of being a restricted person in possession of weapons.
Heber police, along with the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, Unified police and its SWAT team, served a search warrant on a Magna house, 2870 S. 8900 West, at 4 a.m. Monday after receiving an anonymous tip Sunday night, said Heber City police spokeswoman Xela Thomas.
Two of the three police firearms stolen over the weekend and a "majority" of the stolen police equipment were recovered, she said. A total of nine people were in the house when the warrant was served, but as of Monday only two were arrested.
Police had been looking for the weapons since Friday when two vehicles were burglarized in the same Heber City neighborhood. One of the vehicles was an unmarked police car used by the city's SWAT team. An estimated $10,000 worth of police equipment was taken, including an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun, a Glock pistol, body armor, police uniforms, a badge and "numerous other items."
Four homes down the road, a second car was stolen, Thomas said. That vehicle was found abandoned Sunday near 1700 S. Pearl Ave. in Salt Lake City.
Thomas called the anonymous tipster "courageous" and said police would not have recovered the stolen items without that tip. "We are very grateful," she said.
Andrews was charged with eight counts of felony theft in 2002, but the charges were later dismissed, according to court records.
Young, whose adult criminal record in Utah dates back to 1988 according to court records, was convicted of an amended charge of attempted drug possession in 2013 in one case, and registration and title violations along with false personal information in another. He was found guilty of felony drug possession in 2009, attempted DUI in 2002 and felony theft in 1988. Young is also currently facing charges in a case filed earlier this month in 3rd District Court of providing false evidence of title and registration, a third-degree felony.
