FAIRFIELD, Utah County — Two teenage girls were in serious condition Friday after the ATV they were riding was struck by a car.
The girls were riding an ATV with friends near the Five Mile Pass area, on the Utah County side, Friday morning when they attempted to cross state Route 73. The driver of an oncoming PT Cruiser attempted to stop the vehicle, but struck the girls broadside.
"It appears that they didn't look before crossing the road," Utah Department of Public Safety spokesman Joe Dougherty said.
The driver of the ATV was propelled over the top of the car and the passenger fell onto the road's shoulder. The girls were not wearing helmets.
One of the teenagers was flown by Air Med to the University Medical Center, while the other was transported to Intermountain Medical Center. Initial reports indicated the girls were in critical condition, but the conditions were upgraded to serious.
The highway was temporarily closed in both directions, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. Around 12:15 p.m., the roadway was cleared.
