SANDY — An man was transported to a hospital by helicopter after he fell about 45 feet into water Saturday, police said.

The man, 20, hiked a trail to a waterfall in Bell Canyon with three friends prior to the fall, according to police. He was listed in fair condition with a possible head injury and cuts on his head and chin.

He was conscious and spoke to officials before the helicopter left the scene, police said.

Officials said the water he fell into was very cold, and the man may have hit something during his fall or on impact when he landed in the water.

Rescue crews hiked about 1 ½ miles to the man. He was lifted out of the canyon in a basket hoisted to a medical helicopter at about 7:30 p.m.
