SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man after witnesses reported he allegedly spray painted a garage door.

Around 9:20 a.m. Sunday, the Salt Lake City Police Department received a call about criminal mischief in process. When officers arrived at 1888 S. Roberta Street where the alleged crime had taken place, the perpetrator was gone, SLCPD Det. Greg Wilkins said.

Witnesses gave police a detailed description of the individual who was spray painting the door and the vehicle he was driving. Police noticed a gray PT Cruiser nearby at 1860 S. Edison matching the description of the vehicle.

“We had a witness that gave us a great description, and that made a big difference,” Wilkins said.

Police conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle, interviewing the driver Fernando Rosas, 19. Rosas admitted to tagging the door, Wilkins said.

Police searched the vehicle and found spray paint, 105 grams of heroin, 24 grams of cocaine, 3 grams of marijuana and a loaded handgun, Salt Lake police said.

Rosas denied ownership of the drugs, Wilkins said.

“He was in possession of the vehicle that the drugs were in so, he’s going to be charged with those,” Wilkins said.

Rosas was arrested for suspicion of criminal mischief; possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to distribute; possession of marijuana; possession of a firearm by a restricted person; and driving without a license.

“Why he was doing it in broad daylight in the middle of the morning, we’re not sure of that," Wilkins said. "Of course, if you’re to go out and commit a criminal act, you might not want to bring your guns and your drugs with you when you do it."
