PROVO — It’s tough for police officers to predict ambushes, but the recent death of two Las Vegas officers highlights the steps necessary to keep all police officers safe.
No matter how diligent officers are in their safety routines, some determined cop killers can’t be stopped. But Provo Police Chief John King said there are several things each officer can do to minimize harm, including looking for motion, watching hands and always facing the door in public places.
“The attacker has an advantage because they know what they’re going to do,” King said. “(They) disguise their motion, especially in a public place like a restaurant.”
In January, Jose Garcia shot and killed Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cory Wride during a routine traffic stop, according to police. King still reminds his officers to be constantly aware of their surroundings — no matter the assignment.
“Just to make sure you’re not solely focused on writing the ticket or working on your computer, to the way you approach the car,” King said. “Position yourself, your police car, behind the violator’s car.”
