SALT LAKE CITY — A motorcycle driver was injured when he crashed in Salt Lake City Wednesday morning.

It happened at 4700 West and California Avenue just before 7 a.m.

Witnesses said the driver, a man in his 60s, was eastbound on California Avenue when he may have tried to drive around railroad crossing arms.

Salt Lake City police said they believe the motorcyclist tried to beat the crossing arms and was hit across the upper chest. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The severity of his wounds has not been released.

Police said the motorcycle ended up several hundred feet from the point of impact. Investigators still were not sure exactly what happened.

Union Pacific sent employees to check for any damage and make sure the rail arms are still working properly.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
