RICHFIELD — An 8-year-old boy accidentally shot his cousin in the abdomen Tuesday, according to police.

The boy shot a 9-year-old girl, who is his cousin, while they were riding in a car on Main Street at about 510 South, according to the Richfield Police Department. Officers were called to the hospital at 3:47 p.m.

The two children were sitting in the back seat when the boy shot his cousin with a .45 caliber hand gun, investigators said. The bullet from the gun entered and exited the girl before exiting the vehicle, they said.

Police said the girl is in stable condition and expected to recover. They are still investigating the incident.
