FARMINGTON — A 50-year-old jogger was hospitalized Monday after falling 40 feet onto I-15 from an overpass.

Around 5:20 a.m., a man fell onto the freeway after mistakenly thinking he was stepping onto a ledge, Farmington Police Chief Wayne Hansen said.

The man, who runs on the road regularly, decided he should not be running on a car travel lane. He stepped over the cement barrier on the side of the overpass, thinking there was ledge connected to the barrier, Hansen said.

"By the time he realized there wasn't a ledge there ... it was too late and he fell 30 to 40 feet and landed on the southbound I-15 on-ramp from 200 West," he said.

That account differs from earlier police reports that indicated the man fell between a 3-foot gap between the road and the walkway. Hansen was not able to confirm whether there was a gap between the road and the sidewalk.

The man received "numerous broken bones and some injuries." After the fall, he rolled over to the side of the road and called police for help.

The man was responsive when officers arrived, and he told them he made a mistake in trying to clear the overpass. A medical helicopter took the man to a local hospital.

Police have not released the man's name or details of his specific injuries.
